Swimming pool leak detection and repair

We do underwater swimming pool leak detection in both domestic and commercial pools, such as schools, gyms, resorts, spas etc. As well as fountainsunderground reservoirs and water tanks within Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Krugersdorp and Johannesburg. Not only will we help you find the problem quickly and efficiently, but our service includes the underwater repair of the cracks or holes that causes the leaking.

These repairs can be done without having to drain the pool’s water, saving you the cost of water and re-filling. The problem with a leakage is that it leads to costly excess water consumption, an increase in chemical demands and can cause much bigger and more expensive structural and mechanical problems as well as damage to your property in the long run.

Fortunately, our effective and reliable team uses advanced non-invasive leak detection methods and the latest technologies.

They are also trained to know exactly what to look for and which questions to ask for a complete examination.

During the process, we examine and test:

  • The suction line
  • Return lines
  • Weirs
  • Light fittings
  • Pool’s structure

Once we identified all the leaks, our swimming pool repair and renovation services can assist in the repair process

How do you know if your swimming pool is actually leaking

The most obvious symptoms would be water loss. The water level would be dropping faster than what is normally attributable to evaporation or splash-out. If you wake up to find that your pool has dropped several centimetres overnight, you know you’ve got a problem.

High water bills and/or an increase in chemicals required to maintain proper balance, may also be a good indication of a leak-problem. Excess algae growth indicates that there’s new water being put into the pool that is untreated. Wet, mushy or unusually “healthy” spots in the lawn may also be evidence of underground plumbing leaks. Structural damage, cracks, and settling to the deck or pool may also be indications.

If left un-repaired, these can become quite serious. The bigger challenges are the smaller, yet just as serious, leaks that may develop slowly. In these cases, it is important to determine what is “normal water loss”.

If there is a leak in the suction side plumbing (from skimmers and main drains to equipment), air may pull into the plumbing lines that will show up in the pump or be blown back into the pool through the returns. Here, water loss will not be evident. Air in the system can also be caused by a blockage or obstruction in the suction lines. Either situation will require our professional attention to avoid mechanical damage.

The bucket test

  1. To perform the bucket test, you will need a bucket. A tall 20liter bucket works best.
  2. Put some kind of weight, such as brick, into the bucket and fill it partially with water.
  3. Place the bucket on your pool steps so that the top is above water level, and then fill the bucket until the water level in the bucket is the same as the pool water outside the bucket.
  4. Turn off any fountains or waterfalls, because they cause more evaporation than undisturbed water. Otherwise, use your pool as you normally would.
  5. Wait twenty-four hours and check the levels. The idea behind the test is that both the bucket and the pool are subjected to the same conditions with regard to temperature, humidity, wind, rain, etc. That being so, if water is leaving through evaporation, they should evaporate at the same rate. If the pool is leaking, the pool level will be lower than the bucket level.
